Description
North and South, serialized in 1854–55, is a socially engaged novel by Elizabeth Gaskell that contrasts the industrial North of England with the rural South. The story follows Margaret Hale, who moves from Hampshire to Milton (a fictional Manchester), where she confronts class conflict, labor unrest, and her own prejudices. Her evolving relationship with mill owner John Thornton provides a framework for exploring issues of industrialization, gender roles, and social justice. The novel is a powerful blend of romance and reform.
