Sometimes there are some really great interviews and discussions with the psychologists in the top of their field - however, and increasingly over the last few months, it has become a circle-jerk for followers of people like Jordan Peterson and fertile ground for everyday, ‘common sense’ psychology. Or, more correctly labelled, pop-psychology.

Too few and Poor quality of thoughts and narratives from the host. This does not warrant having an ad break every 5minutes.

Such a relief to find something with this level of analysis and detail and also with humour and a lightness of touch - the discussion consistently goes deeper than the usual podcast tropes.

I have gotten a lot out of Dr Scott Barry Kaufman's podcast. Kaufman is a goofy but clever guy. I like that. It's not self-help psychology it's science. Yet it isn't boringly technical. There are a lot of great episodes, especially with regard to how mindfulness has entered into 21c scientific psychology which is surprising yet makes perfect sense. Then, there is the wonderful "Dark Triad". I also like the episodes on neuroscience. Excellent!

Interesting topics and guests - awkward host

Really enjoy listening to the various guests on the show as they have some great insights. However the host is cringe and awakened. He worries too much about following a structure he has set and often interrupts with almost random questions that distract from the specific topic at hand and bring the conversation back to his desired structure. This leads to disjointed conversations which makes it hard to follow.
Also, ads interrupt right in the middle of conversation.

Always thought provoking

Scott hosts the leading lights of psychology and related disciplines in delightful, informal chats about the most important things in life. Although he is a prolific thinker, writer and speaker he has a fabulously humble manner and is the absolute antithesis of slick. Thanks Scott--keep bringing us this great smorgasbord of ideas

Yes it’s a bit awkward and self-conscious and lacks the polish of similar podcasts but the presenter does know his stuff (even if he likes to hammer the point home) and there are some great topics and brilliant speakers.

Scott is my gym buddy. He doesn’t know it but he keeps me company when I work out. Scott’s superpower is enthusiasm. He’s a complete psychology fanboy and there’s almost nothing in the field he doesn’t seem to find fascinating. He’s also very Catholic in his approach; you don’t need a PhD to be invited on the programme, just an insight into the human condition. Sometimes I want to tell him to be a little less self effacing. He’s an impressive thinker in his own right. But I do like the way that this is not about him but his being a servant of the ideas being discussed. It’s a great show. Listen to it!

Highly recommend

I have been listening to Scott’s podcast for around a year now. Each episode has been fantastic in its own way and I have learned so much both from the podcast and what is has inspired me to go on a research further. As somebody with no formal education is psychology, the podcast is still incredinly accessible and stimulating. Thank you so much for your fantastic work with the podcast, I look forward to the future episodes 😊

I look forward to each new episode coming out. I find Barry to be refreshingly different from other presenters and I feel he gives an honest and thoughtful interview each time and his experience in psychology shines through (unlike some self-proclaimed gurus with podcasts). I also appreciate the variety and quality of the speakers each time. I hope these podcasts continue for a long time to come! Thank you! :)

I love this podcast and it has introduced me to some brilliant, fascinating and useful concepts. My one beef with it as that so often guests talk about their research and findings through a heterosexual framework (when discussing relationship ideas). I understand that the majority of research probably has historically been done with hetero couples/people, but it feels exclusionary and wouldn’t take much to contextualise with a comment that acknowledges people who aren’t heterosexual, even if the research IS biased in this way.

Brilliantly informative

An inspirational series. i can only write from personal experience (duh) but it resonates in a number of ways
(1) As a creative person/addict, the ability to go behind the veil again a fulcrum for the process. the feeling of newness , novelty and awe is how i would describe this(there are no words-but we need words )
(2) So the child grabs the sweets that the adult eats ; is how those feelings will represent themselves as expression. A creative person can capture the impulse as a child but by definition it will be expressed in adult terms.
(3) The time spent behind the veil is proportionate to the time spent in the 'real world'.
(4) There follows periods of exhaustion, since processing those feelings into a reality is tiring
(5) in those periods of exhaustion/ stand by mode -other sitmulus is not required ; in fact is irritating, things seem louder ,
(6) Much of the mundane seems stupid ,pointless , or for other people
(7) Can be effects on motor skills when returning ; discordination
(8) Easier to rationalise with the incorporation of other personalities , also easier to switch back
Obv there is a deal of self absorbtion in the process
xx

The Psychology Podcast

 –
General Populations
 –
2018-04-01
After listening to a number of these podcasts I find myself wondering who Dr Kaufman's intended audience is? There is a great deal of terminology and technical language here that would go over the head of most people, especially the 'general population' that Dr Kaufman appears to enjoy talking about. What is the point of having a guest on and then talking about all your own research? Surely the point of having a guest appear on a podcast is to talk about them, not yourself Dr Kaufman. It's a shame as mostly the topics are very interesting and thoughtful. Upon occasion Dr Kaufman does seem to be unprepared and sometimes the conversation feels a little forced, maybe he needs to work on his interviewing skills.

Infinitely fascinating

Dr Kaufman is often unprepared for his interviews and does not appear to do even basic research into the interviewee’s Work. Furthermore the interviewer often attempts to focus too much on his own work, often crowbarring this into conversations arbitrarily. Despite this the podcast is able to attract some interesting guests and appears to be one of few podcasts which focus on clinical psychology, meaning that the podcast will attract listeners by default.
