Is responsible tourism just a buzzword, or can it truly make a difference?
How can a safari be both a luxurious escape and a meaningful way to protect the environment?
Are horseback safaris only for expert riders, or can anyone discover the magic of exploring on horseback?
And is the stunning landscape behind The Lion King pure imagination or inspired by real places?
In this episode of Outside the Corral, I travel to the breathtaking foothills of Mount Kenya to meet Milli Musee, the inspiring General Manager of Borana Lodge, a place where wildlife conservation, luxury, and horseback adventure go hand in hand.
Born and raised in Kenya, Milli brings a deep personal connection to the land and a strong commitment to sustainability. Under her guidance, Borana Lodge continues to thrive as one of East Africa’s original eco-lodges, founded by the Dyer family in 1993.
Horses are central to Borana’s story, carrying guests past giraffes, rhinos, and the iconic landscapes that inspired The Lion King, including the real-life Pride Rock. But Borana is more than a beautiful lodge — it’s a purpose-driven conservation powerhouse. With 100% of profits reinvested into the land, Borana leads initiatives in rhino protection, community education, and sustainable tourism.
Episode highlights:
“I’ve worked in every major war zone in the world, I’ve seen the effects of not looking after land or people firsthand. Borana does the opposite: regenerating land, empowering people, and healing communities.”
“The writers of The Lion King stayed here and built the story from what they saw. Here, you can ride past Pride Rock on horseback.”
“Rangers here protect rhinos like a nanny protects a baby: eyes on them 24/7.”
“Sometimes I tell my family back home something that has happened here, and they think I’m making it up - but life at Borana is that magical.”
“Borana proves that tourism can contribute to healing the planet instead of harming it.”
